While walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, Martin Luther, the 16th century Protestant reformer, was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst the evergreens. It reminded him of Jesus when He left the stars in heaven to come down to earth. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected such a tree inside his home and lighted it with candles. The Greatbatch School of Music at Houghton College is proud and excited to present Christmas Prism 2018, a gathering to celebrate Christ coming to the world. After centuries of waiting for the Messiah, at just the right time, God sent His Son, Jesus, to be born of a virgin, to teach us how to live, to be an example for us, to die on a cross for us, and to be raised in triumph over sin and death. He is the One who heals us, who redeems us, and who calls us to live lives of reconciliation and restoration.
During this Advent season, we give thanks for his first coming at Christmas time, and eagerly await his second coming, when all will be made new!
This year’s Prism concerts will feature over 200 performers and will include both vocal and instrumental music, as well as poetry and scripture. In an evening full of joy and wonder, we will come together as God’s family – as Christ’s body, to celebrate, “O Night Divine!”
